St. Mary’s Cathedral was built in 1899 as the Catholic Church in Fargo. The property also contains the Bishop’s Residence as today the Cathedral also serves as the seat of the Diocese of Fargo.
Having been built in 1899, the architecture, designed by Edward P. Barssford, is that of a Victorian Gothic Design with the tower standing at 172 feet and housing the lone bell on the Church. The smaller tower of the Cathedral houses a statue of the Virgin Mary. The Cathedral was commissioned by Bishop Shanley who sought to move the Diocese from Jamestown to Fargo. Today, Shanley is honored by the Diocese by having the local Catholic High School named after him.
