Greek immigrant Andrew Ginakes opened the Empire Café at 424 Broadway around 1932 to 1935. In 1936, the café became one of the first establishments in Fargo to apply for a liquor license. It became known as the Empire Liquor Store in 1946. Ginakes sold the Empire in 1947 to brothers Wilmet and Delvin Swanick. In 1964, the name was changed to the Empire Tavern. The tavern is still owned by the Swanick family today and remains one of the longest running bars in town.
